To commemorate and support ‘Armed Forces Day’ this Saturday 24 June, the Bus 18 Partnership has announced that serving members of the armed forces, veterans and cadets can travel on bus services across West Yorkshire for free on the day.
Armed Forces Day is an annual event, celebrated to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. First West Yorkshire, Transdev and Arriva Yorkshire is therefore introducing free travel for serving and retired members of the armed forces on 24 June, to ensure they can get to the special events taking place, across the region.
Free travel is available on Saturday 24 June to members of the armed forces who are in uniform or who show an identification card. The offer is also open to members of the cadet forces in uniform and veterans who display valid identification such as the MOD issued Veteran’s Badge.
Paul Matthews, Managing Director of First West Yorkshire, said: “We have been a proud supporter of Armed Forces Day for many years and it’s great to see all of the region’s major bus operators coming together for this special day. As a committed supporter of the communities we serve, we want to make it as easy as possible for people to attend local events with this special offer on Saturday.”
Jon Croxford, managing director for Arriva Yorkshire said: “Many of our drivers and customers have been affected by those lost in the military service. We hope by joining together under the Bus 18 partnership, to provide free travel to members of the armed forces, will help honour this annual event.”
Cllr Eric Firth, Deputy Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee, said: “I am delighted to see bus operators coming together to provide this special offer to help serving and former members of the armed forces attend events, marking those who have served and sometimes paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I hope this offer will be an annual event.”
Alex Hornby, CEO for Transdev Blazefield, said: ‘We are always proud to support those who protect and serve our country by offering free travel on Armed Forces Day, but even more so as we stand together with our fellow bus operators within the Bus 18 programme in doing so this year. This is especially appropriate for Transdev given our staff-nominated Charity of the Year is the very deserving cause of Help For Heroes, and we look forward to helping ensure that the various events around the region are a success.”
